One of the most common questions parents ask is, "How much tutoring does my child need?" The frustrating but honest answer is: it depends. There is no standard number of hours that guarantees a specific score.
This article explains why tutoring needs vary so widely and how to determine the right level of support for your student.
The Starting Point vs. The Goal
The biggest factor is the gap between the student's current diagnostic score and their target score. A student scoring a 650 on Math who needs a 700 requires a different level of intervention than a student starting at a 450 who also wants a 700.
Closing a 50-point gap on the 200-800 scale might only require a few weeks of targeted strategy review. Closing a 250-point gap requires fundamentally rebuilding foundational math skills, which takes significantly more time.
Foundational Knowledge Gaps
Some students are naturally strong at math but don't understand how the SAT tests it. They need strategy tutoring. They need to learn how to use Desmos and how to navigate the adaptive format.
Other students have genuine gaps in their algebraic foundations. They don't know the rules of exponents or how to factor quadratics. Before they can learn test strategy, they have to learn the math. This dual requirement significantly increases the amount of tutoring needed.
Strategy can be taught quickly; foundational math skills take time to build. A diagnostic test will tell you which category your child falls into.
Test Anxiety and Pacing Issues
A student might know all the math and all the strategies but freeze under the pressure of the ticking clock. Overcoming test anxiety and building pacing stamina requires repeated, proctored practice and confidence-building over time.
This is a behavioral challenge, not just an academic one, and it often requires more sessions to fully address.
Student Motivation and Independent Practice
Tutoring is only a piece of the puzzle. The bulk of the work happens between sessions. A student who diligently completes their homework, analyzes their mistakes, and takes practice tests seriously will need far fewer tutoring hours than a student who relies entirely on the tutor to do the heavy lifting.
Structured Programs at Lahage Tutoring
Because needs vary, a structured approach is critical. At Lahage Tutoring, our packages start at $679. We use the initial diagnostic to map out exactly what needs to happen.
We don't recommend endless, open-ended hourly tutoring. We establish a clear plan based on the student's specific gaps, whether those are foundational math concepts or advanced Digital SAT strategies.
