What Questions to Ask a Math Tutor During Interview

Hiring the right SAT math tutor can drastically shift your child's college prospects, but finding the right fit requires asking the right questions. Unfortunately, most parents rely on generic inquiries that won't reveal whether a tutor actually knows how to beat the test.

As someone who specializes strictly in Digital SAT Math, I've seen too many families waste time and thousands of dollars on tutors who just print off worksheets and hope for the best. To make sure you're getting an expert and not an amateur, here are the most critical questions you need to ask during a math tutor interview.

1. Are you a generalist, or do you specialize in SAT Math?

A great high school algebra teacher isn't necessarily a great SAT math tutor. The SAT tests a very narrow band of math concepts in a very specific, recognizable way. Generalists try to teach "all of math," hoping that translates to higher scores. Specialists know exactly how the College Board writes its questions, which traps to look out for, and how to outsmart the test itself.

You don't hire a general practitioner for heart surgery. Don't hire a generalist tutor to navigate the complexities of the Digital SAT.

2. How do you integrate Desmos into your teaching?

With the shift to the Digital SAT, the built-in Desmos graphing calculator is a game-changer. If a tutor isn't heavily relying on Desmos to save time and bypass tedious algebra, they're preparing your child for the old SAT. Ask them specifically how they train students to use Desmos for systems of equations, absolute value, and matching graphs.

3. How do you approach the adaptive format of the Digital SAT?

The Digital SAT uses a multi-stage adaptive format. If your child performs well on Module 1, they are routed to a harder Module 2, giving them access to top scores. A tutor who doesn't emphasize precision and accuracy in Module 1 to unlock the harder routing isn't doing their job.

4. Do you use official College Board materials?

If a tutor's primary resource is a third-party workbook, run. The only questions that accurately reflect the nuances of the test are official College Board questions and those found in the Bluebook app. Ask how they use official materials to structure their lessons.

5. How do you measure progress?

Progress should not be measured by "feeling better about math." It must be measured by data. A professional tutor will have a systematic way to track the types of questions your child misses, identify patterns, and target those weaknesses with precision. Our prep packages, which start at $679, are built entirely on data-driven weakness targeting to move students up the 200-800 scale efficiently.

A good tutor will talk about your child's starting score, goal score, and exactly how many points they need in each category to hit their target.

Don't Settle for Generic Answers

When interviewing an SAT Math tutor, listen for specifics. They should talk about Desmos, the adaptive modules, and official practice tests. If their answers sound like they could apply to any generic math class, keep looking. Your child's future score is too important to trust to someone who doesn't understand the mechanics of the test.
